I wonder why Safelite seems to get a large share of the windshield replacement work that come into the shop. This is especially true if it is an insurance job or a large national account. And yet, if you talk to a mechanic, they don't have anything nice to say about the quality of Safelite glass. If you look at the reviews on Consumer Affairs.com or Yelp or the BBB, the negative reviews outnumber the positive. These negative reviews focus on scheduling, showing up, customer service, sloppy work, and poor workmanship. It didn't make sense to me that if the company was so disliked why do they get such a large share of the business?

Back in 1991, the then chairman of Safelite realized that admin costs to insurers for replacing auto glass were very high in proportion to the work done ($100 on a $300 repair job). So they came up with a really smart solution, they added an automated claims processing system and sold 21 of the top 30 insurance companies on its "Total Claims Solution", now known as "Total Customer Solution". It linked its computer network with those of the major insurers via electronic data interchange and was able to take on the windshield claims processing functions normally done by the insurance companies. The insurance companies liked it because it reduced insurance company processing costs from $100 per windshield claim to twenty five cents per claim! In addition Safelite's net income increased 4X.

Today, Safelite is part of Belron US, owned by a Belgian company, D'leteren. They operate in 50 US states, Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. According to research they have a 14% share (seems higher) of the $2.4 billion market for replacement automotive glass. The reason is they are much more than a glass replacement company, they are a claims management and claims procecssing company. And their real clients are the largest insurance companies and corporations in the world.

There are many ways to compare presidential candidates. In thinking about their lives, their backgrounds, I began to wonder what kind of cars they own. A bit of research revealed that Donald Trump has a number of cars in his stable; 2003 Mercedes Benz SLR Mclaren; 1956 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud, Rolls Royce Phantom, and a 1997 Lambo Diablo VT. Pictured above, the Lambo is electric blue with his name on a plaque (badge) on the inside of the driver's door.

By comparison, Hillary has stated that she no longer drives a car. However, the last car she drove was recently listed and sold on ebay for $60,000. It was a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera with 33,000 original miles.

Cute, dogs driving cars. What about a dog sitting in your lap while you drive? Did you know there are laws about that and it varies by state. There is one state, Hawaii, that makes it illegal to operate a motor vehicle while holding an animal in your lap or to be "in the driver's immediate area" if it interferes with the driver's ability to control the car. In New Jersey you can be fined up to $1,000 and charged with animal cruelty for improperly transporting animals. Other states such as Arizona, Connecticut, and Maine have distracted driving laws which can be used to charge drivers with pets on their laps if it affects their driving. Distracted driving can include any activity that prevents you from driving safely--even eating while driving. Rhode Island has proposed legislation to make holding an animal on your lap a distracted driving violation As far as I can tell, New York, has distracted driving laws, but makes no mention of animals. The focus is on texting and driving.

The best way to travel with your pet is to limit its ability to move around in the vehicle. That means a restraint of some sort. There are carriers, belts and harnesses, and gates (to keep the dog in the rear of the vehicle). Since small pets can become projectiles in the event of an accident you wouldn't want your dog flying out of the car or slamming into something. Just like small children, pets should be protected and secured when going for a car ride.
